The Price of Forgetting: Valuing the future of Disease Modifying Therapies for Alzheimer’s Disease

21st July 2025

The number of dementia patients is expected to increase from 46 million to 131.5 million by 2050 as the world’s population ages. As the patient population grows, so does the economic burden, with global dementia-related costs projected to reach $2.8 trillion annually by 2030. The primary driver of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease (AD), responsible for 60-80% of cases, with the prevalence of AD doubling every five years after the age of 65.

Mortality due to AD has risen by 89% between 2000 and 2014, even as deaths from other major causes, such as heart disease and stroke, have declined. This is largely due to the progress healthcare has made towards treating most age-related diseases other than AD, for which there is no known cure.

Most approved therapies have little impact on the disease’s progression, instead focussing on managing cognitive symptoms, particularly memory loss and attention. In short, AD remains one of the last untapped frontiers in pharmaceuticals: the patient population is large, and the clinical need is urgent.
